A new energy is simmering on the corner of Larimer Street and this coming Wednesday the pot will overflow as Tom’s Urban 24 opens its doors. The restaurant concept has been stewing since last year when entrepreneur, Tom Ryan, bought the space that formerly housed Samba Room at 15th and Larimer. The name has been kept a secret, well, until now. “I am big on marketing but even bigger on drama,” grins Ryan.
It was only a matter of time before Ryan made headlines again for his creative concepts surrounding food. You can thank him for inventing Pizza Hut’s Stuffed Crust Pizza and also the McGriddle. His next challenge was to bring fresh burgers back to the table but with interesting combinations and new toppings, which led him to open up the successful chain of Smashburgers.
His focus is now set on a hip restaurant concept that takes original recipes and adds a spin. “We wanted to stick to serving familiar foods like pizza, burgers and burritos but make them stand out.” You won’t find a basic burger and bun at Tom’s Urban 24 but make room because the Urban Slopper is on the stove. In this case, an oversized bun is wrapped around an Angus beef butter (yes butter) burger, and then covered with green chile and cheese. Yes, a mouthful. Check out the menu for new takes on pizza, salads, sandwiches and more.
Ask Ryan how he started thinking of such innovative concepts and he will tell you: “That’s like a sixth beer discussion.”
Give the man a few beers and he will tell you: “I have a burning desire to be creative.”
Top off a shot and you learn: “Someone once told me that everything that’s been done in pizza has been done. I set out to prove that’s wrong.” Stuffed Crust Pizza proves his point! Give this innovator a challenge and he will not only run with it but also show that it’s never to late to keep reinventing food, and even yourself.
Opens Halloween – all treats no tricks! (Especially if you order the smoothie that calls for one part donut!)
If you are looking for food on the go, don’t count Tom’s Urban 24 out. The not so secret “Side Door” serves urban food on the go from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. Snack on a Tom’s famous pop tarts, donuts or even a burrito.
